The real fun here is in designing new games from scratch, and it is very hard and takes a long time to get right.
Getting a game published these days is harder than getting a green light to make a movie. If you are interested in understanding what it took to get ZooCube published here is a gross simplification of the about six years effort.
- Developed a dream and goal of making a totally original video game that would be regarded as a classic
- Carried out lots of research into innovation, creativity and design
- Developed an “artistic side” which is quite difficult as a programmer
- Came up with an original concept that I thought would be fantastic
- Designed and developed it iteratively over many years to continuously improve it
- Won the Edge competition which gave me credibility
- Enlisted an agent to help find a publisher – John Cook of Bad Management
- Signed the publishing deal
- Found various technology and software partners to help
- Liased with the publisher in terms of development, marketing and branding
- Outsourced and managed the development through to release
These days it is even harder to get your game published, and it’s even harder to get it to stand out with all the “noise” that is on the Internet. However there is hope, just see the long tail.
